Cycle of Learning - Cryptic Cryptids - Card 2
We begin tonight's puzzling as an attempt to focus on something other than the war in Ukraine. Слава Україні! Героям слава!
On the front of the card, we have the word Eureka and motto backwards, with a set of numbers we presume are also backwards, in front of a tree and a red sky. Clovis City is what the letters spell - a city in California, as is Fresno on the back, and Eureka is California's state motto.
On the back, we have a message, with the words up, right and down capitalized. A series of worms forms the name of Fresno, Californian city in the San Juaquin Valley, near where I grew up for a while. From there, we look at a map, and Clovis and Fresno are 10 miles from each other. In contrast I grew up a distant 50 away.
While I'm staring at the map, my brilliant partner finds the cryptid we're looking for: the Fresno Nightcrawler - from looking at the knight chesspiece on the stamp, and the worms forming the word Fresno. I'm still not sure what up/right/down means, but it does talk about the sunny side. Misthinking of Sunnyvale (not Sunnydale), I realize that there's a Sunnyside High School in Fresno, on Peach street, which is where Amanda Bryson sent the postcard from, though not the exact address. My partner notices that there's ink staining the name, could just be 'and son'. Hmmm. Son of Night Crawler?
Still stuck on up right down. Stuck, I look for clues - 805 Peach is not referring to Sunnyside High, but to Railroad Park, in Clovis City, CA, on the Clovis-Fresno Rail Trail. Looking at the park, the road going up: Peach Avenue; the road going right: W. Alluvial Avenue; the road going down? Or, going by the postcard, you can go UP Peach, take a RIGHT on Shepherd, and go down on Sunnyside. 200 Sunnyside doesn't look like anything, though. Stuck, until it's pointed out that it's a 200th birthday. Sierra Bicentennial Park is on Sunnyside in Clovis.
So, the Nightcrawler is in Bicentennial Park in Clovis City, CA? I feel like we're missing something, but a quick look at the hints says we've solved all the puzzles. A bit of a quickie, faster than I was expecting for a distraction. Still, enjoyable enough for a slow Saturday night. Thanks, Enigma Emporium!
OH! and then we remember that there was a website that we would need later from the last card! Back to the records of the last puzzle! A more substantial ending. Discovery Propels Us Forward!
